A country lane near Barbon in the Yorkshire Dales

Barbon to Casterton Round

  • £500

Children are free, but we need to know how many people in total to expect.

Join us on this pleasant low-level 8 mile (12.9km) walk taking in fields and quiet country lanes in the valley of the River Lune, with lovely views across to the hills.

There are several points of interest, including the Bronte sisters’ connection to Casterton and various country houses – Barbon Manor, Casterton Hall and Whelprigg, and the Roman road from Ribchester to Carlisle and the dismantled railway, both of which ran along the valley. You may wish to end your walk with a visit to Barbon Church, which is believed to date back to the 12th century, or at the Barbon Inn, a 17th century coaching house!

A level 4 YDNPA walk; the route includes steps, stiles, uneven ground and slight gradients across open countryside. Please wear outdoor clothing appropriate for the weather and sturdy footwear with good grips. Walking boots recommended.

Don't forget your packed lunch!

Dogs not allowed. (assistance dogs welcome)

Places limited, booking advisable from Hawes National Park Centre.

Free for age 18 and under

Walk starts from Barbon Village Hall, LA6 2LL
